Everyone Has a Strategy
I've reviewed dozens of AI strategy documents. They're remarkably similar. Identify use cases. Assess data readiness. Build a center of excellence. Establish governance frameworks.
None of this is wrong. All of it is insufficient.
The companies that actually generate value from AI don't have better strategies. They have better execution. They ship. They measure. They iterate. They make decisions faster than their competitors.
Why Execution Fails
Three patterns kill AI implementations:
Pilot purgatory. Teams build proof-of-concepts that never make it to production. The demo works. The edge cases don't. Nobody owns the transition from experiment to product.
Consensus paralysis. Too many stakeholders, too many review cycles, too many committees. By the time everyone agrees, the market has moved and the opportunity is gone.
Technology worship. Teams choose tools and frameworks based on technical elegance rather than business fit. The best solution is usually the simplest one that works.
What Good Execution Looks Like
The teams I've seen succeed share common traits:
- They define success in business terms before writing any code
- They ship incrementally — useful output every 2-4 weeks
- They have a single accountable owner who bridges business and technology
- They kill projects early when the business case doesn't hold up
- They document what they learn, not just what they build
The Role of Leadership
AI implementation isn't a technical problem. It's a leadership problem. Someone needs to hold the vision of what the business needs, translate that into technical execution, and keep both sides honest about progress.
That's the work I do. Not writing code. Not designing architectures. Leading the conversation between business stakeholders who need results and technical teams who need clarity.
The best AI strategy is the one that gets implemented. Everything else is a deck.
